Frequently Asked Questions

  Active Web Reader

Q. How is Active Web Reader different from other RSS Readers/ Aggregators?
A. Active Web Reader is absolutely FREE. It owes its tremendous popularity to a host of unique features. To name just one, Active Web Reader is the only product that has an advanced Auto Discovery feature while browsing. You can find out more about the unique benefits by viewing the Comparison chart.

Q. What is the RSS format?
A. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for distributing and aggregating Web content (such as news headlines). Using RSS, Web content providers can easily create and disseminate feeds of data that include, for example, news links, headlines, and summaries.

Q. What is Auto Discovery?
A. Active Web Reader has a unique feature, called Auto Discovery, that automatically discovers RSS feeds while you browse the Internet using Internet Explorer. A small, non-obtrusive box pops up listing the RSS feeds that might be present on the page you are browsing. You can add these RSS feeds to Active Web Reader for reading and continuous monitoring.

Q. Can I add my website’s feeds to the Active Web Reader and distribute them?
A. Yes. DeskShare has recently launched the Active Web Reader Customizer, which allows you to add RSS feeds to your own special, custom version of Active Web Reader. You can freely distribute your own customized version of Active Web Reader to your audience.

Q. What is Auto Update frequency?
A. The Auto Update feature allows you to specify a time interval after which your RSS feeds will be monitored for changes. The time can be defined in terms of hours or days. The minimum polling frequency for changes is 1 hour.
